What is the Art of Gratitude and how does it work?

The Art of Gratitude is not a new idea. It has been around for ages now and can be used to alleviate mental stress and release tension in one’s body.

This anxiety natural cure does not require any preparations and can be performed anywhere and anytime.

You may have noticed that anxiety causes you to feel separated from the world around you. It’s almost as if there was a thick fog (made up of fearful thoughts) that would limit your sight and deprive you of any positive feelings you may have.

If this is the case than the best way to deal with it is to shift your focus from your mind (constantly overanalyzing all of these disturbing thoughts and causing the fog to thicken) to your heart.

Imagine that your heart is like a sun that causes the fog to lift and makes you feel warmer inside. In order to make your sun radiate with more power you need to practice the art of gratitude.

How to implement the Art of Gratitude

Start by closing your eyes and shifting your attention to your heart area. Put one of your hands on your chest (or imagine it is there if you’re driving) and try to envision the warmth radiated by your heart.

treatment of anxiety wouldn't work without the Art of GratitudeSpend two minutes in this state and then search your mind for something that you’re deeply grateful for. It can be anything from being a parent, having a great car to winning  a poker game. You will know whether it’s the right thing if it will cause an involuntary smile and a pleasant warmth in the heart area.

Hold on to this feeling for as long as you can and then open your eyes. If done properly you should now feel much more relaxed and get a bit of perspective on the things that were tormenting you.

There is no time limit on this exercise, it can take anything from two minutes to half an hour. Practice as long as you want and as often as you want because the better you get at it, the quicker you will be able to shift to this pleasant state of mind when anxiety arrives.

This will not only help you reduce the emotional intensity of intrusive thoughts but also stop anxiety panic attacks from occuring.

I usually do this exercise right after I wake up, when I’m stuck in the traffic jam, while waiting in the queue or before going to bed, basically anytime I have a spare minute.

I also encourage you to use this exercise in the stressful moments of your life. You may have argued with someone in work and are now in conflict with that person. Try to spend a few minutes practicing the art of gratitude and your attitude towards the whole situation will drastically change.

As you can see one does not have to reach for pharmaceuticals when dealing with anxious thoughts. Treatment of anxiety that brings the most benefits is based on mental and physical exercises and does not require you to use any type of chemical drug.
